MOUNTAIN SADDLE HORSES
These saddle horses were originally bred by the mountain people of the hills and valleys of eastern Kentucky for the demanding needs of farm life. It was an obscure breed until it became noticed in the late 1980s. Since then, these horse have become highly sought after as pleasure horses in Kentucky and the rest of the world. They are highly prized for their easy-going temperament, intelligence, versatility, willingness, and especially their smooth and natural 4-beat gait.
The Kentucky Mountain Saddle Horse is distinguished by its natural four beat gait called an amble, or rack. This smooth, gentle gait can be maintained over rough terrain and has the same footfall pattern as the walk has. The result of this gait is that the rider sits almost motionless astride the horse while it carries the rider at speeds almost as fast as most horses canter. These hardy horses have a calm, kind demeanor. Registered horses must show a gentle and willing disposition; demonstrate evidence of a naturally smooth, even, 4-beat gait under saddle; may be of any color with white on face, legs, mane, or tail. The Kentucky Mountain Saddle Horse should be of medium bone and substance, as well as being athletic and refined. They are usually compact, close-coupled, and well-muscled. They have a cob-sized head with a straight profile and broad forehead. The neck is of medium thickness and length, and the withers are flat.

'03 RMHA/KMSHA double registered Beautiful Chocolate with Flax mane and tail Mare.15+ hands barefoot. This is a sweet moving mare that loves attention and handles well. A lovely rack and flat foot walk, as well as a smooth canter on both leads. Show or trail, this stunning mare can go anywhere. And gets you noticed! She was shown as a filly, but has been exclusively trail ridden for the past years now. Some neckreining, and leg pressure. Light mouth and great breaks. Has been ridden in large group rides and alone. Her pasture mates and riding buddies have been paso finos, so she has a bit of that working personality. Not a horse that has been passed around. Two owners only.

12/01 TWH/KMSHA double registered black Mare. 15.1+ hands in her keg shoes. She is the best of both worlds. Put her in the show ring and she has the presence to perform and win (she can show either Walking horse or Kentucky Mountain) Put her on a trail and she is a fun ride. Double Sun’s Delight D on the bottom (dam on site) and Back Up and Push, a Pusher son on the top side. Smooth rides that will get you noticed no matter where you are. This mare was born and raised here. No problem with loading, cross ties, bathes, clipping (except she is not in love with her ears). Has great hooves and very rarely loses a shoe, no matter what the size, but now she is barefoot and still moves great. We have clients using her at FIELD TRIALS. So ok with guns and dogs. KMSHA/RMHA Light Palomino mare. A naturally classic stepping mountain horse. She will knock your socks off. After all, she is barefoot, shouldn't you be? Showy and flashy that will get attention anywhere. We give advanced lessons on her too, so she is really a great mare. Double registered, but really too big moving to go into Rocky Mountain classes. Definitely a Kentucky Mountain Show Horse. 15 hands. Nice wide build. Long mane, tail and forelock. Still shedding out her winter coat, but her color will be so much darker if she was kept in. Right now she is outside 24/7.
